Analysts say Widodo wants to build stronger ties with India after overtures to China missed the mark. Relations between China and Indonesia were strained earlier this year over China’s claims to almost all of the South China Sea which Indonesia contests.
In June, Widodo presided over a cabinet meeting on board a warship off the Natuna Islands, in a sign of asserting sovereignty over waters in the southern reaches of the South China Sea after Beijing stated its “over-lapping claim” on nearby waters.
The India-Indonesia statement on maritime cooperation speaks of commitment from the leaders of the two countries to “maintaining a maritime legal order based on the principles of international law.”
